About

Hazel Milburn Ito is a Honolulu-based artist, illustrator and educator. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland and moved to rural Australia as a child. Her husband Mike Ito is a surf photographer, and they have two children.

Hazel’s work has been published, screened and exhibited internationally, and she teaches high school art.

Artist Statement

My studio practice uses drawing, painting and mixed media to explore memory, emotional responses, and the line between real and imaginary. I also make poetic micro-short videos and illustrate picture books for children.

The common thread in my work is that it seeks to evoke a feeling, or a sense of time and place, and to transport the viewer to another world - my inner world. Developing my artistic voice is a never-ending journey for me. While I lean heavily towards abstraction, and my process usually begins this way, I love colorful characters and sometimes whimsy, humor, mischief and the absurd will find their way into my work.
